Chapter Profile

Since its founding in 2005, Joplin NORML has provided a voice in the public policy debate for those citizen's of Joplin who oppose marijuana prohibition and favor an end to the practice of arresting marijuana smokers.

Today Joplin NORML continues to lead the fight to reform local and state marijuana laws, whether by voter initiative or through the elected legislatures. Joplin NORML serves as an informational resource to the local media on marijuana-related stories, providing a perspective to offset the anti-marijuana propaganda from the government; lobbies state legislators in support of reform legislation; publishes a regular newsletter; hosts an informative web site and an annual "Cannabis Revival" music festival in Landreth Park; and serves as the one of the more than 120 local chapter groups comprising a national network of citizen-activists committed to ending marijuana prohibition.

In 2008, members launched Sensible Joplin, a campaign committee dedicated to placing an initiative on the 2008 November presidential ballot which seeks to amend city-wide marijuana possession penalties to a fine-only offense.

Joplin NORML meets regularly at Blackthorn Pizza & Pub (510 S Joplin Ave) on the first and third Tuesday's of every month at 7pm.
